INFORMATION ABOUT SELF-PACED COURSES
CAOS self-paced courses are designed to be as flexible as possible. Students can enroll in self-paced courses throughout the quarter. Self paced courses generally end with a "55" extension. (Example: CAOS 112I-55). Self paced courses are listed as TBA (To Be Announced) for the class time since there are no specific class times. Students can work on the course any time the CAOS lab is open or at home. Check with Staff to see if the course can be worked on at home.
There are no attendance requirements or specific due dates for assignments or quizzes. You must, however, complete ALL required assignments, quizzes, and tests by the end of the quarter to pass the course. Most courses are 1 or 2 units. Each unit usually requires approximately 24 hours of lab time per unit to complete; however, this is a general guideline and should not be used as a basis for completing the course.
Follow the 2 important steps below to learn how to enroll and how to start a self-paced course (e.g. Watching required Orientation video and obtaining proper materials for the courses).
STEPS TO ENROLL IN A SELF-PACED COURSE
1. Find the list of self-paced courses
Self paced courses generally end with a "55" extension. (Example: CAOS 112I-55). They are also listed as TBA for the class time since there are no specific class times.
Go to http://deanza.edu/schedule/ and click View Open Courses to see the list of open CAOS classes and write down the Course Call number. For quick reference of available CAOS self-paced courses, click Pass/No Pass (Credit/No Credit) Course List link.
2. Enroll in the course
You can enroll in a self-paced course up to the last week of the quarter.
Depending on when you want to enroll, you can register in (3) three different ways - online, in person, or using the STAR system. Important: After enrolling in self-paced course(s), print your Class Schedule. You will need it later.
• Before the quarter begins, register through STAR telephone registration system or the online registration Web page http://www.deanza.edu/registration.
• During the first two weeks of the quarter, come to the CAOS Lab AT 203 or call the CAOS Lab at (408) 864-8390 to obtain the Add Code Label and then register through STAR telephone registration system or the online registration Web page http://www.deanza.edu/schedule. (Note: In the summer quarter, the Add Code is available during the first week only.)
• After the second week of the quarter, come to the CAOS Lab AT 203 to have the Add form signed by CAOS Staff and take the signed Add form to the Admissions Office (see campus map). Bring your Parking Sticker or 8 quarters for parking.
STEPS TO START A SELF-PACED COURSE
1. View REQUIRED CAOS Orientation:
If you have not watched the 10-minute video, click the Orientation Video link to watch it. The Orientation Video covers CAOS lab operation, lab procedures, how to submit and complete CAOS work, etc.
Note: On-campus orientation sessions where an instructor is available to answer questions are held on the first day of each quarter for all new students. Bring your Parking Sticker or 8 quarters for parking. See orientation schedule below:
Fall quarter
Monday 9/21/09: 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
2. Read Greensheet
Read and print the Greensheet (PDF file) for important information on drop policies, grading and testing policies.
3. Obtain the Booklist and Purchase Course Materials
Read and print the Booklist (PDF file) for important information. The booklist will show all the REQUIRED course materials for each course including the student handbook with the progress folder, textbook, etc. that you must purchase before beginning your course. You can puchase course materials online at De Anza College Bookstore.
4. Stamp Progress Folder
Before you begin, bring a copy of your class list showing your enrollment printout, picture ID, and the Student Handbook with the progress folder to the CAOS lab in AT 203 to have the progress folder stamped. (For campus map, go to http://www.deanza.edu/map. Bring your Parking Sticker or 8 quarters for parking). Work can not be approved until your progress folder is stamped.
5. Begin Your Course Work
Read and follow your Student Handbook which will guide you through the steps to complete your course. Also, be sure to read the Greensheet (PDF file) for the CAOS policies for submitting assignments and taking tests. Most courses except CAOS 102L and 180J can be done at home provided you have the proper software. Please consult with the CAOS staff regarding the required software version for your course. You will need to create a data disk to obtain the files you need for the course (See Step 6 below). Periodically, you will need to come to ATC 203 to submit your work. You can not hand in more than 5 items at one time, and you will also need to take tests/quizzes in the CAOS Lab ATC 203 when indicated in your Student Handbook.
6. Create Data Disk
If your Student Handbook tells you to create a data disk, click here.
