I. INFORMATION ABOUT SELF-PACED DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES
(Requires campus visit. See Greensheet).
CAOS self-paced distance learning courses are designed to be as flexible as possible. Our courses are listed as TBA (To Be Announced) for the class time. Most CAOS self-paced distance learning courses can be identified with a course section number ending in a “*Z”.
For example CAOS 91AN-63Z.
Students may complete their course work any time that the CAOS lab is open for instruction or at home depending on software availability (See the Green sheet for assignment deadlines). All theory tests will now be performed online using Catalyst.deanza.edu. All assignments must be printed and submitted to the CAOS lab for grading. Students CANNOT submit assignments online in Catalyst. You must complete ALL required assignments, quizzes, and tests by the last day the CAOS Lab is open to pass the course. Each unit of credit requires approximately 24 hours of lab time to complete.
Important!
Given the limited number of computers available in the new CAOS computer lab (ADM 119), the CAOS department cannot guarantee students an available computer - particularly during busy times (weeks 4, 5, 10 and 11). We suggest that you plan to work in the lab during the less busy weeks so that you can complete your work by the deadline(s). Moreover, a majority of your online courses work can be completed from your home/work computer. |
II. STEPS TO ENROLL IN A SELF-PACED DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE
Requires campus visit (See Greensheet). Skip to Section III - Steps to Start a Course if you are already enrolled.
Good news!
Enroll early for Spring 2013 CAOS courses. The CAOS department will be allowing increased enrollments for Spring quarter 2013. Because CAOS courses are very popular and fill quickly, please enroll as early as possible. Unlike in past quarters, there will be no special priority dates to enroll during Spring quarter. College course registration begins March 7.
This spring is the last quarter that the CAOS department will offer courses, certificates and degrees. (Summer will have very limited course offerings.) However, in Fall 2013, the CIS department will offer two NEW courses with similar content to CAOS courses. These two NEW CIS courses include: CIS 93 (Computer Literacy, 4.5 units), and CIS 99 (Office Software Applications, 4.5 units). |
1. Obtain, read, and print the CAOS Greensheet and Booklist:
Click the following links to print the Greensheet (PDF file) and Booklist (PDF file) or you may obtain a printed copy in the CAOS lab.
2. View Required CAOS Orientation Video:
Click the following link to view the 10-minute Orientation Video which covers CAOS lab procedures, how to complete and submit CAOS assignments, etc.
3. Enroll in your course:
The CAOS department will be allowing increased enrollments for Spring quarter 2013. Because CAOS courses are very popular and fill quickly, please enroll as early as possible. Unlike in past quarters, there will be no special priority dates to enroll during Winter quarter.
You may only add courses through the first two weeks of the quarter (Enrollments may be limited). If there is space available, obtain an add code, then enroll online at De Anza Registration or you can process at the Admissions & Records Office. New students adding courses must watch an orientation video.
Note: Due to budget cuts, the CAOS Department is being phased out over the next year (Spring 2012 through Spring 2013). However, we will continue to offer CAOS courses through Spring 2013. We will update this web page to reflect any changes to this timeline.
III. STEPS TO START A SELF-PACED DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE
Required campus visit (See Greensheet).
1. Obtain Greensheet and view Orientation Video:
If you have not obtained CAOS Greensheet and viewed Orientation Video, click the following links to print the Greensheet (pdf file) and view Orientation Video online.
2. Purchase required course materials:
Follow the Booklist (pdf file) to purchase course materials on-campus or on-line through the De Anza College Bookstore.
3. Log into Catalyst:
IMPORTANT: Log into Catalyst.deanza.edu and complete the Required Orientation Quiz for EVERY course you are enrolled. You will be DROPPED from any course that you have not taken the Required Orientation Quiz by Monday of the 2nd week of the quarter (See Greensheet regarding DROP policy). If however, students have not been dropped from their course but intended to be dropped, it is the students' responsibility to drop themselves and to check the status of their enrollment throughout the quarter. We suggest, however, you complete the Orientation Quiz as soon as possible.
4. Stamp Progress Folder:
After taking and printing the Required Orientation Quiz for EACH course you are enrolled, bring your printed quiz results, your picture ID, and the Student Handbook with the Progress Folder to the CAOS lab to have the progress folder stamped by Monday of the 2nd week of the quarter (See Greensheet regarding DROP policy).
IMPORTANT: Course work cannot be approved until your progress folder is stamped. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE A STAMPED FOLDER IN THE CAOS LAB FILE CABINETS BY THE DEADLINE MAY BE DROPPED (See Greensheet regarding DROP policy).
5. Begin Your Course Work:
Read and follow your Student Handbook which will guide you through the steps to complete your course. Do not turn in more than 10 assignments at one time (See Greensheet) and you will need to complete your tests/quizzes in the Catalyst.deanza.edu website as indicated in your Student Handbook. As stated in the Orientation Quiz, only 5 assignments maximum may be turned in PER DAY, per course on the last two days that the CAOS lab is open. If your Student Handbook requests that you to create a data disk, you can complete this procedure by visiting the CAOS lab and follow instructions in your handbook or download the required files at home by clicking Create Student Data Disk.
